Grattan Avenue is located in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn. Method design was contacted by Astral Weeks development group to devise a new façade strategy and public space strategy for a previously designed core building plan. Method design was limited to the façade and public space, while working within the bounds of the existing layout and plan. Method Design’s strategy for the facade was to utilize a regimented grid which varies in spacing to organize the areas of façade and window into coherent relationships. Working within the existing floorplan, Method re-prioritized the windows, and changed their relationship to the façade while reimagining the façade materials and buildup to greatly increase thermal performance. A neutral palette achieved by using cement panel siding ties in to the industrial nature of the area, as well as giving the building a modern presence on the block. Given the site’s close relationship to the street, Method designed a landscape plan that deals with the needs of the building, while providing shielding from the immediate foot traffic on the adjacent sidewalk.
